The Light of Even One Small Candle

“There is not enough darkness in all the world to put out the light of even one small candle.” ~ Robert Alden

What is it about candlelight that we love so much? Why does it make us feel all warm and "glowy" in a way that no overhead light or lamp ever could? Is it a case of form over function?

Wikipedia says that, "Before the invention of electric lighting, candles and oil lamps were commonly used for illumination. In areas without electricity, they are still used routinely. Until the 20th century, candles were more common in northern Europe. In southern Europe and the Mediterranean, oil lamps predominated. In the developed world today, candles are used mainly for their aesthetic value and scent, particularly to set a soft, warm, or romantic ambiance, for emergency lighting during electrical power failures, and for religious or ritual purposes. Scented candles are used in aromatherapy. "

I would have LOVED living in a time when candles were commonly used for illumination. (Okay, so maybe I wouldn't have loved the "no electricity" part of that, but it does sounds romantic.) There are many reasons why I love candles and candlelight. (1) Having candles burning in different little spots throughout my home just makes me happy. I don't just save them for evening; I often light them during the day as well. (2) For me, it's a visual thing. I only love candles if I can SEE the flame. I don't want a candle, no matter how lovely it may smell, that is in an opaque container, unless it is a tiny one and I can see the flame from above. (3) Fact: Everyone looks better in candlelight. Harsh, fluorescent lighting is horrible on anyone over the age of...let's say 17.  (4) Scented candles remind me of different things -- events, places and people -- that I have known or experienced. The scents bring back different memories and recollections to savor...or forget! What makes fragrance so deeply personal and our opinions of them so diverse is our olfactory memories associated with them.

Candles, like many things in life, are a simple pleasure. If I had not a penny to my name, I would like to think that I could make a happy home with a few fresh flowers in an old glass milk bottle, the light of even one small candle and the memories that they would bring.

What is it about candles that YOU love?

I'm melting, I'm melting...

Various stages of soy wax from fresh flakes to melted liquid.

Shades of the Wicked Witch of the West? Possibly. Especially since Halloween is just around the corner! Well I AM melting...soy wax that is, and I'm getting ready to pour a fresh batch of our IT'S FALL Y'ALL / Pumpkin & Spices seasonal candles. This may be my all-time favorite fragrance that we offer. I simply can't wait for fall to come so we can start making this one. I try to keep extras on the shelves so I always have one to burn each evening in our kitchen...mmmmm. Delish.

Gotta run and check the wax temp to see if they're ready for pouring. I'm tempted to get a "Hot Now" sign (like Krispy Kreme's) for our front yard. Don't think the neighbors would approve. ;-)

How ya like them apples?

Custom candles for Red Apple Tree Photography.

NItemow that the new site has finally launched and the blog is activated, I want to try to catch up and thank one of our newest customers for their recent (and second) custom order.

Red Apple Tree Photography selected Carolina Chic to provide the lovely custom gifts that they present to their wedding and portrait photography clients. With a mix of travel tins in Southern Belle / Peaches & Cream and Southern Gentleman / Sweetgrass & Tobacco and 8 oz. glass tumblers in County Fair / Caramel Apple (fitting, no?) they've found a perfectly sweet remembrance for brides, grooms and beauties.

Many thanks to the incredibly nice owners/photo team Crystal and Keith and best wishes on the upcoming arrival of their "little apple." May she not fall far from the tree.

Remember that we love custom orders -- just imagine your business logo or personal message on our candles. Whether it's a wedding favor, a holiday gift from your family or a token of business appreciation, we can handle it for you!
